he's terrible at numbers, but the panic that sparks in his stomach turns him into a mathematician, crunching the numbers on sugary coffees and overpriced, artisanal sandwiches. nah, i can pay for it. it's a halfhearted attempt to convince himself. regardless of the contents of his wallet, he plans to do absolutely nothing about this until they reach the register.

Clearly, by his theorizing, that must mean that Aaron is in the top 20% of men. Or maybe Avery is the miscellaneous 20% of women not attracted to the top percent. The latter didn't seem quite right, but she also considered almost every person she's ever met to be worthy of top 20%.[break][break]

She hadn't faulted him at all for his clumsiness and inability to grip the bag because she'd struggled too. By the end of it all, nearly every ice cube in the bag had ended up on the floor. And, given how warm it had been that day, they'd melted pretty much immediately. [break][break]

But he'd stayed, he'd smiled, he'd laughed - maybe cried (she certainly had), and he'd helped her with clean up and the fish tanks later. Or at least one, as she'd probably ushered him out with a plea to enjoy his day and not worry about hard work on his day off with his boyfriend.[break][break]

Had she implied that he had a boyfriend? Absolutely.[break][break]

Which is definitely part of the reason she is so willing to join him on this date-not-a-date. Because she doesn't still piece together that they weren't dating, even if he'd assured her already. Maybe he was just being bashful, or they hadn't made it official. She was pretty sure she'd seen chemistry there.[break][break]

The woman rounds the corner, bright eyes searching the small crowd for her friend. Her face dissolves into a wide, excited grin as she approaches. She's run a bit late as a result of dimness-- she'd gotten halfway here before realizing she was still wearing her work overalls covered in grass stains and pollen and who knows what else. Of course she had to turn around.[break][break]

Now, fortunately, Avery is wearing something cute and simple, a nice little yellow sundress that bounces along with every step she takes.[break][break]

the sound of his name being called unglues his eyes from his phone screen. avery isn't hard to pick out from the people around them — bright two-toned hair, bright yellow sundress, bright smile, there is definitely a pattern here — and he grins back at her as she approaches. "yo!" the greeting is clipped by an amused laugh. "it's nice to see you again, too."

he tucks his hands into his pockets (to maximize his cool guy factor, of course) and inclines his head towards the door. "let's head in." he turns away briefly to open the door for her.

he might've been broke and jobless and a high school drop out and a chronic user of 3-in-1 shampoo, but he still knows a thing or two about chivalry. for girls whose standards are on the floor, he stands head and shoulders above the others. the others being, like, murderers and other felonious characters, but they still count for something.

"you know what you want?" he asks as he heads in after her, taking a cursory look at the menu behind the counter. he's never really been to sawsbucks before, but he's confident they can't fuck up a breakfast sandwich. "i've got this," he tells her, putting a hand on his chest. "so get whatever you want."
